The town was founded in the 1950s by developer Frank Bruess. The Missouri native moved to Texas in 1940 and took over 30 acres of unincorporated land northwest of what would soon become Houston. As he developed the area, Bruess read about a town in England called Hillshire and liked the British-society sound of it. In starting his own community, Bruess borrowed the name but cut an L, leading to the start of Hilshire Village in the early part of the 1950s.

The middle part of the 20th century was a time of major development for the Houston area, as the city and many of its surrounding localities incorporated. Just prior to Houston’s own incorporation, Hilshire Village incorporated in 1955. Its population has remained miniscule, though, as Houston annexed the surrounding area and limited the amount of development that could take place in Hilshire Village. Today, the town consists of mostly residential area, with the population at 746, according to the 2010 census. But that small population does it big, as Hilshire Village is one of the 10 wealthiest localities in Texas according to per capita numbers.
